Bolo stamp on passport from LA Consulate

Hi,
Received our passports a while ago after hitting a million dead-ends in do****entation. Nothing short of a miracle and the help
of many people!
My question - There is a bolo stamp on our passport from the LA consulate. It expires this year. We were charged in the $50 range for them.
What are they for?
Do I need to renew it?
Do I need to go to the consulate....
Those that are familiar with LA know they can't be contacted by phone...
Any help would be appreciated.

You don't need to renew it unless you are flying directly into Italy from outside the Schengen area. All other countries don't know/care about the stamp, only Italy.

Thank you. So it won't invalidate the passport? Do you know why they did the stamp? I live the los angeles area.
If I wanted to go to Italy, would it have to be brought current?
