Aliens?

I'm in the process of gathering the necessary docs for jus sanguinis. I'm trying to prove through father's mother's father. I asked my paternal grandmother if her parents became naturalized after her birth, and she said yes, saying she specifically remembers her father studying for the tests. However, I was looking at the 1930 Census, and it says her parents (as of 1930; my GF was born 1923) were "Al", having immigrated in 1922. What's the difference between being naturalized and being an alien?

Once you become naturalized, you are no longer an alien. You are a U.S. citizen.
